About the experience

We can host up to 11 travelers*

Hike pine forest trails in the middle of the prairie, meet prehistoric dinosaurs and discover the culturally diverse city of Medicine Hat on this 5 day 4 night history and culture tour of the Canadian Badlands and SE Alberta. Accommodations, admissions and most meals are included.

Start your week with a warm welcome to Alberta at River Ranche, on the Siksika Nation, where we will enjoy a generous home cooked lunch and listen to stories from a Blackfoot Elder. This evening we step away from city lights and visit one of the worlds largest dark sky preserves at Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park. You will gaze into the night sky like you have never seen before. Tonight we stay at Elkwater Lake Lodge.

Wake up refreshed and ready for adventure. After breakfast set out to explore the town of Elkwater and Cypress Hills Park. Hike or bike the trails or try kayaking, canoeing or paddle boarding on the lake. Relax and wander the townsite taking in the peace and quiet of this quaint town. We depart early afternoon and head to Medicine Hat. We start our Medicine Hat adventure in the Historic Clay District with a tour of the old factory at Medalta Potteries. Then, we taste our way through local breweries Hell's Basement and Medicine Hat Brewing Company. Relax for the evening at Medicine Hat Lodge or explore on your own.

At the half way point through the week we experience the sights and tastes of Medicine Hat. We start the day by touring through locally owned coffee shops for coffee roasting and tasting. At the last stop grab your favourite beverage to go and we will set out to explore the historical sights of the city. We will end at the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre where you can take in the galleries and the museum. Find yourself a spot for lunch and choose to relax for the afternoon or take on a North West Mounted Police adventure in Police Point Park. In the evening we will rejoin together as a group and set out to taste our way through locally owned restaurants in the heart of the city. Meet local restauranteurs and dine on creative dishes that highlight the diverse prairie culinary culture.

After your tastebuds have been satisfied in Medicine Hat we make an early morning start and head into the heart of the Canadian Badlands. We start our dinosaur adventure with a visit to UNESCO World Heritage Site Dinosaur Provincial Park. This largest, most continuous stretch of Badlands in Canada boasts the most dense fossil beds in the world. Take in the other-worldy landscape at this unique destination. After an adventurous morning we jump back on the bus for a picnic lunch on the road, heading to Atlas Coal Mine. Here, we will climb the worlds last standing wooden tipple. We end this busy day with a visit to the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller. Walk among the worlds largest collection of dinosaur skeletons- most of them discovered right here in Alberta! After a very busy day we deserve an evening to relax. We will unwind in the hamlet of Rosebud at the Rosebud Country Inn.

Take the morning to recharge from your busy week. Enjoy a leisurely brunch at the Inn, then wander the town of Rosebud popping in and out of gift shops and galleries. After lunch we will meet again to take in our last experience together- the latest performance at The Rosebud Theatre- the only professional live rural theatre in Alberta. After the performance we return to Calgary to bid each other farewell. From here you may return home via the international airport or extend your vacation in this western Canadian city.
